Handel Dettingen Te Deum
We shall be singing the Dettingen Te Deum described by one recent critic as a 'true Handelian tub-thumper'. It was written in 1743 to mark a military victory (famously, the last occasion when a British monarch – George II – led his troops in battle). The music is for five-part choir (SSATB) and lasts about 30 minutes – and is in a style that will be familiar to anyone who knows the Coronation Anthems (or indeed Messiah!) It makes a thoroughly suitable piece for Singing Day. Many of the solo passages work particularly well sung by choir; and being Handel, the music is energetic, very readable (and in English!). Our Singing Days always culminate with a full (and public) performance of the music we have worked on – usually with one or two soloists. This year we shall be joined by two trumpeters, eminently suitable for the martial nature of the Dettingen Te Deum .
